Director and founder Peter Barnard has more than 27 years experience in the construction industry and building services contracting. He has a BE (mechanical) and specialises in HVAC design, with extensive experience in the development of building health services through his time with Fletcher Healthy Buildings.

In 1992 Peter purchased assets from Mecon Bishman (Fletcher Mechanical Ltd) and formed his own company, expanding the mechanical services maintenance business, and diversifying into mechanical contracting and security and access control service. In 1997 he oversaw the sale of Advanced Building Services (Auckland) Ltd to AE Smith & Son Pty Ltd and continued to work as General Manager for AE Smith in New Zealand.

In 2001, he joined with partner Russell Weeks to establish 1st Mechanical, which has grown to become one of the leading mid to large air conditioning companies in the country.


Co-director and founder Russell Weeks’ decades of experience in the air conditioning industry includes 15 years in project management and supervision, four years commissioning, and four years service and maintenance of all types of HVAC systems and plant.

As well as his extensive knowledge of pipefitting and duct erection, Russell has specialist knowledge of electronic communicating controls systems, and has worked with microbiological monitoring, chemical and ozone treatment of water systems, and building health investigations. Russell is one of the country’s most experienced HVAC estimators and project managers.

1st Maintenance’s Director and General Manager, George has more than 28 years experience in the mechanical service and maintenance industry throughout New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific.

A refrigeration/air conditioning engineer by trade, he has worked on major projects at companies including Sky City Casino, BNZ Wellington, Sheraton Fiji, Ascot Hospital, Price Waterhouse Cooper Tower, The University of Auckland, and Telecom buildings in Wellington, Christchurch, and Auckland.

George leads 1st Maintenance’s 30 strong team of Auckland staff, who are each committed to quality service for their diverse range of clients.


1st Maintenance’s Service Manager, Paul, has worked in HVAC installations, mechanical service and maintenance around the world including commissioning large chiller and data centres in the United Kingdom, Africa, Hong Kong, Australia and the Pacific, for clients as diverse as the Bank of England, the British Consulate in Nigeria and Pacific Data Solutions in Vanuatu.

His more than 25 years experience in the industry, combined with his training as a refrigeration/air conditioning engineer, sees Paul run 1M’s highly regarded service team. He has been with 1st Maintenance since its inception in 2003.
